Hi everyone,

So this is a little thread for everyone to introduce themselves.  There was a lot of material the first week, but next week as we're reviewing photos we'll get to know each other in class better.

For now, if you'd like to introduce yourself, just post here:

No website to speak of, as of yet.

I've been taking photos for awhile, and although I've played with film cameras back in the day, I pretty much grew up with digital - cheaper, less error-prone, and instant review; just a more efficient way to learn, all around.  I got my first DSLR in August 2006, and have been shooting for the Daily Californian as a staff photographer since then (my first semester here at Berkeley).  Besides the freshmen/sophomore CS39J seminar, I haven't taken any formal photo classes to speak of, mostly because I never found one that I liked - a photo class that started with a strong technical foundation, rigorously analyzed methods, took full advantage of digital, and eschewed such subjective things as aesthetics artistic meaning.  This is actually the biggest reason why I'm now teaching this course - to address the kind of needs that photo classes at Berkeley (and anywhere else, as far as I know) lack.

I'll shoot anything, really - the best way to learn more is to broaden your horizons, and spending some time shooting portraits for example will allow you to come back with some fresh ideas for landscapes.  This is also one of my favorite parts of working as a photojournalist and going out on assignments for the Daily Cal - I'm forced to go out there and shoot new things, and it changes up every assignment.  Mostly I'm a big fan of portraits and landscapes, and I enjoy shooting theater performances a lot too.

As much as I'm into photography, both as a photographer and teacher, it's actually probably not in the cards for me in the future - photography's a fun hobby but career-wise I'm studying EE, which is fairly unrelated.  Who knows, maybe I'll join Foveon or Canon and start designing cameras for all of you =).

I have a lot of equipment, and it changes constantly - currently it's

Canon 5D
Canon 40D
Sigma 12-24 f4-5.6
Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS
Sigma 24-70 f2.8
Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS
Canon 50 f1.8
Canon 85 f1.8
Tamron 90 f2.8 macro

Sigma EF-500 DG Super flash
Sigma EF-500 DG ST flash

Photography background / What you're interested in taking photos of
I got my first digital camera as a gift for my high graduation and now I am senior soon to graduate in May 2008 and have been taking pictures ever since on that camera, the camera was a point-and-shoot camera, Canon Powershot S200.

I never took lessons or took time to learn more about photographic or camera techniques, etc but I still took photographs and I have gotten into natural photography after my small weekly hikes in the South Bay Area trails became an obsession.

What you want to do in the future with regards to photography
I have a huge interest in meshing two art forms together, Arabic Calligraphy and Natural photography to create a visual presentation combining the elusive written text with the majestic beauty of nature.

Canon Powershot S200

Photography background -
I have been taking photo for about a year.
Back in the day, I never like to take pictures, because I don't think it is important for anyone.
Right around high school graduation, I got my 2MP camera phone and it rise my interest of taking pictures of people, natural, and stuffs.  I got my DSLR on 2006 christmas.

I never took any lessons as well, but I did downloaded a lot of tutorials to learn, mostly lightroom, I like to use lightroom to do some minor editing.

I never thought what to do in the future with photography.  For me, it is a tool to save each moment in my life.  It is kind important for me.

Equipment? Nikon D80

Re: Introduction thread

Name: Amanda Chou
Year: 2nd
Major: BioE
website: um, I don't have much of any website

Photography background: I did very little bit of photography in high school with a powershot canon then, mostly just to record what I did and what was happening around me so that I and others could look at them and recall what happened then. Continued taking pictures (a lot more) last year- primarily for a student organization. I also met a few friends last year who are much bigger camera buffs than I and they opened the door to dslrs and photography-as-art. I got my Nikon D40x (my dad bought it for me) just a few weeks ago...

What you're interested in taking photos of: I really like macro shots of random stuff/positionings, and candid shots/portraits of people.

What you want to do in the future with regards to photography: get much better pictures of people and of nighttime scenery; learn to work around people hiding from/posing in pictures when they see a metering light or hear the shutters.

Equipment? Nikon D40x; 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses

My life is photography. I take my camera almost everywhere and I never let it leave my side, except when I go to Mexico to build homes with a church group. The neighborhood kids (and sometimes the elderly women) flock around me to see images of themselves on my Nikon. Their excitement at seeing a camera and having their picture taken is so incredible that I can’t deny them a chance to hold my camera. It’s such a delight to see their smiles and hear their laughter as they excitedly point to their picture on the LCD screen.

I am a very observant person and I rarely forget the faces of people I meet. I find that when I have my camera in hand, approaching people is simpler and it opens doors to communication that otherwise would be closed or difficult to open. I am a visual learner and I like to express my thoughts, ideas, and concerns through photography. I’m still deciding on a major, but I am almost positive that I want to be a photojournalist post-college; I hope to make it to National Geographic someday!

Prior experience: My first photography class was in ninth grade, where I was introduced to the darkroom. The second class I took was as a senior in high school, where I created a portfolio of my work and explored with digital imaging. I also took a photo class this past fall semester at a junior college where I learned how to use my DSLR. I've shot for a camp, missions organizations, and one wedding.

Hi everyone! My names J.P. Shami and I'm a Freshman.

Photography Background: I got my first SLR over Christmas Break and have really enjoyed it since. I used to shoot with a Sony Cybershot but I felt like doing more than just regular pictures. I haven't taken any classes before but I've always wanted to.

What you're interested in taking photos of: I'm really interested in taking pictures of people (that kinda sounds creepy, but I don't mean it in a creepy way :) ). I'm also interested in taking photos of architecture and color intense scenes. Also, whatever catches my eye.

What you want to do in the future with regards to photography I hope to be an all-round better photographer. I really want to sharpen my skills so I can start taking really good photos. I mainly want to be able to take really good pictures of people.

Equipment? Canon Digital Rebel XTi with provided lens.

Photography background
I have had a strong interest in photography since early high school, since my mother took photographs with her Minolta 5000i AF SLR at my soccer games and on family vacations. I followed her with my 2MP digital camera, and upgraded through the ages and finally graduated to my digital SLR over this past summer. Paid for on my wages as a network security specialist with Residential Computing, I've been proud of the system and enjoyed its use thoroughly for the past 7 months. I host a website from a server sitting in my room that contains an online photo gallery of my past photography.

What you're interested in taking photos of
I go on adventures (generally hikes) quite often and come across some very nice landscapes that always seem to be difficult to capture. However, I've found myself in a variety of photographic scenarios and in general just like to capture life.

What you want to do in the future with regards to photography
My work is entirely amateur and I don't think that will change. However, I'm going on to grad school next year and I hear the wages of a starving artist are better than those of a grad student, so anything could happen...

Equipment?
Everything I have was either passed down to me by my mother or came with my camera (got it on eBay), excepting my pride and joy prime lens.

        Sony Alpha A-100
        Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6
        Minolta 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6
Minolta 35-80mm f/4-5.6 w/ Philips 0.65x Wide Angle Conversion Lens (always seems to get blurry suckiness)
        Minolta 50mm f/1.7
        Targus 3″-12″ miniature tripod

Photography background: I got interested in photography late in High School when I took a basic class (film-oriented) and was given a film SLR for my birthday. I quickly realized that developing film is something of a pain in the ass and not all that satisfying in terms of instant gratification, and got a Powershot S40 before heading off to college. It worked well, but I missed the feel of using an SLR, and finally bought a Rebel XT about a year and a half ago...it turned out to be a really good idea, since my interest in photography has dramatically increased. Lately I've been spending some time in Lightroom and Photoshop, trying to figure out how best to tweak pictures in post production and make up for their, uh, deficiencies at the time of shooting.

What you're interested in taking photos of: I take a lot of pictures when traveling, and when I'm at home a lot of the time the subject ends up being stuff I've cooked. Aside from the food porn, I'm open to taking pictures of most anything (and would be interested in getting into macro photography, I think).

What you want to do in the future with regards to photography: enhance my digital tweaking skills, figure out the many intricacies of white balance and exposure, try out macro photography.

Equipment: Canon Rebel XT, 18-55 mm lens (kit), 50mm f/1.8 lens (a pretty sweet deal for $75!), 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM lens.

Photography background: Started like a few others it seems with a powershot, then moved onto a Fuji S7000 "prosumer" camera which was pretty nice at the time. Have followed the canon rebel line up since then, waiting for the 450D!

Interests: It seems like I mostly associate photography with travel. During school semesters the camera usually collects dust in the closet. I like to shoot just about anything, abstract/surreal scenes, animal/flower macro, architecture and industrial, landscapes, and of course people/portraits, especially candid.

Future: This: http://www.ashesandsnow.org/

Photography background:  I have been taking photos since high school. Initially, I was afraid of SLR cameras for a long time because I did (still don't) not know how to use them very well. However, I was growing unhappy with the limitations of my point and shoot digital camera so I recently purchased a SLR camera.

What you're interested in taking photos of: Nature and Landscapes (though I want to expand).

I haven't been doing photography for too long. Took a semester of intro to black and white photography (film based) at a community college, but that's it. I met some cool people that have helped me with questions that i have.
Just got a Nikon D40 for christmas, so have been playing around with it. I'm not particularly good, so hopefully this class will help me with lighting and other cool effects.
Photography is just a hobby. I like taking emotive pictures and pictures of real life, oh and nature! It's really just for me to show off to friends and family, but there are very few pictures that i feel are good enough.
Equipment is just the Nikon D40 and i have a zoom lens that i haven't used yet and actually not quite sure what size/magnification it is?

Photography background: I didn't get my first digital camera until halfway through my freshman year here at Cal. It was a Canon Powershot A75 I think... since then I've been through a series of Canon point & shoots. After travelling summer 2005 I decided I liked photography & got a Nikon D50. I didn't really learn all the controls until this past semester when I studied abroad in Hong Kong & travelled all of Asia, because travelling gives you the best subjects for your photos. I don't have any sort of formal training, this is just a hobby that I wanna get good at

What you're interested in taking photos of: nature, landscapes, compelling photos of culture & people

What you want to do in the future with regards to photography: hopefully some minor work on the side for microstock or magazines, but I think you need formal training for that, or years of dedication

Equipment?
Nikon D50 with 18-55 lens kit
Nikon 50mm f/1.8D
I want to get the 18-200 f/3.5 but at $700 I think it'll be after I start working

i've been dedicated to canon's for a while but was only using point and shoots until recently when i purchased my first canon dslr. decided to work all of last summer in order to splurge on a 5d. i've just been taking pictures of random things.

i want to mainly concentrate on portraiture, studio, fashion and documentary. i guess that is a pretty wide range. actually i enjoy taking pictures of almost anything.

i want to go to art school in the near future for photography and make it a part of my life either as a means of living or a frequent hobby.

Just started taking pictures after getting my dad's camera away from him for a semester.  Really want to be able to use it to do some interesting graphic design pieces.  I like taking pictures of inanimate objects for the most part but hopefully more people soon.

I'm not really sure what I'll do with photography in the future but hopefully it'll always be a fun hobby for me.

Photography background:
I had two point-and-shoot cameras throughout high school and college. I don't recall taking a lot of photos until the summer before college, but even then I mostly enjoyed the camera more as a method of preserving memories than anything else. Eventually I became more and more interested in photography as an art and began to admire the photos taken by friends with dSLRs. My mother and I began researching a bit on dSLRs last summer, but I didn't really have any intent to purchase one because the prices and the expectations that came with owning such a camera intimidated me. My parents surprised me with a Canon XTi for Christmas, however, so now I have the burden of trying to live up to the camera... ha...

What you're interested in taking photos of:
Portraits are always fun, and I love to take photos of animals, especially of my dog. I'm really interested in macro photography, but macro lenses are expensive...

What you want to do in the future with regards to photography:
Photography will more than likely remain a hobby for me when I need to relax. But I'd like to learn to take better photos and post-process them. Before I buy any more equipment, I'd like to try out those do-it-yourself things and see how they work out.

Equipment:
Canon XTi
18-55 mm lens
